Organization Qualifications:
Nonprofits must qualify and be approved to be part of Pedal for a Purposeš. The program is limited to nonprofit 501(c)(3)
organizations. Once accepted into the program the charity
must adhere to the following:
- All printed material must clearly state that fund-raising
is strictly voluntary and not a requirement to ride in the
event.
- No reference to the event as being the nonprofit's ride.
- Nonprofits may offer incentives to fund-raisers. Competition
through use of incentives for different levels of fund-raising
should be avoided. The same incentive or an incentive of
equal value should be awarded for a given level of fund-raising.
Nonprofits should coordinate their efforts.
- The nonprofit should plan on providing volunteer support
for the event (pre-event and/or the day of the ride).
- Fund-raisers must be registered with the event in order
to ride.
- The nonprofit will handle all the fund-raising. The event
personnel are not involved in fund-raising or handling the
funds.
- The inclusion of nonprofits in the event will in no way
change the standard event operating procedures.
- Approved organizations will be listed in event publications,
newsletters and press releases where possible.
- News releases by the nonprofits should mention that they
are participating in the Pedal for a Purposeš program.
- Nonprofits desiring participation must apply in writing
to Ellis Corets, Director, ellisc@p4ap.org
Incentive Structure:
Since inception of the Pedal for a Purposeš program nonprofits
have used various reward structures to help maximize ridership
participation and fund-raising efforts for each event. Offering
to reimburse a rider's entry fee, by the nonprofit of the
rider's choice, for raising five times the entry fee gives
many riders an incentive to participate.
Rewards over and above the entry fee reimbursement have raised
the bar on fund-raising potential across the board.
Below is an example of a reward structure that was used in
the last Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic:
Raise $350 and the nonprofit you raise money for will reimburse
your $70 registration fee. Raise funds in addition to the
$350 and you will earn a great reward:
